What a pain

Well it's been over four weeks since my last tournament and I'm still feeling pain in my shoulder. I have a lot more mobility in it and can pretty much do everything I did before the injury but my shoulder doesn't work the same anymore.

We found as my shoulder mobility returned my tiny muscles around my scapula were not pulling their weight so my larger muscles are compensating now to move the shoulder. My rehab folks thought maybe I had injured one of the main nerves in my shoulder but I don't have any numbness in my shoulder and I can first the seemingly non-existent muscles if I try and there is no pain involved when I flex them.

It's a quandry but I'm still pushing through my basi rehab routine. FYI: unless your really badly injured I would advise talking frankly to your rehab folks and find out what they will charge you if you use cash instead of insurance (unless you have fantastic coverage). Ny folks have given me plenty of basic expercises using a workout ball (the huge ones they have at the gym), a rubber band (low to medium resistance), very light plyometrics and basic stretches to do at the gym or home. I visit my guys once per week and because I'm not using my medical coverage to pay for the visits I simply pay a discounted fee in cash once per week. It's actually cheaper for me to do so.

Anyway. I'm back to owkring out as well. I rolled in four matches tonight after a short warm up. Everything felt great. The guys knew about my shoulder so they did not attack it too hard but they did try to compromise if it was available. It never hurt once and I felt really good considering I am fighting a mild cold right now.

It's great to back on the mat once again. GREAT news Team USA BJJ has moved to 6th Street and Norco very near Circle K South of Pedley Ave in the old Martial Arts Supply store. The place is twice the size of the old gym we had on Hamner and it's kinda cool inside. It's got a rough beat thing going on that the guys dig for some reason, it just fits. We have lots of work to do before we host a grand opeing party and flyer the neighborhoods but John and the guys are stoked to be in our new digs. Come check it out of your in Norco, CA. The guys always dig seeing new faces. We have a ton of torunament guys and recreational grapplers so you always ave someone to roll with no matter what rank you might be.

Well i'm getting healthier and feeling strong once again. I'll be taking it real easy until my next visit to my ortho. He's got to sign me off before I compete again and I want him to take a look at how my arm flexes these days. It's weird to not see my lat and have my shoulder obviously set back further than the other. I am hopeful it will regain stability and full strength one day down the road, until then I'll baby it when I can and avoid tournament activity for now.

Peace and Happy New Year.

Time for Rehab!

Well I finally got into to meet with my orthopedic socialist yesterday. So after getting my shoulder rotated in every way possible and working on pushing and pulling my arms in and out he figured out that I have one of two issues. The first being a tear in a muscle that appears to be responding to ice and inflammation control meds and is also healing over time; I should mention here I could finally raise my arms equally as high straight over my head (something I could not do for two weeks after my injury). I tried my palms facing me and facing away from me and also a military style press (hands out facing up in the air and my elbows bent at should height), this final lift like press to the ceiling pinches a bit but hey it’s getting better.

We found one funky issue however. Through manipulation the doctor found it very hard to cause pain in my shoulder (I did not take ibuprofen or pain killers ten hours prior to my visit so I would not be numb for his tests) while manipulating, and the points he found we very funky angles. He had a thought that I may have a tear that is healing or possible I tore a small section of the cartilage around my shoulder socket. If I tore the cartilage we may need to get an MRI in six weeks when I do my follow up visit. But I’m hopeful we have a simple muscle tear that will heal with exercise and time.

I also got a cocktail shot in my shoulder which is suppose to allow me to do my rehad with less pain. It consisted of a numbing agent, steroid and cortisone I believe; all of which have worked very well to lower the overall discomfort in my shoulder.

I have also been cleared to start running again and doing basic not grappling related exercise with my therapist. I’m beginning my rehab program this Friday and will post more once we see how this effort goes. I have chosen to work with my friend Scott Hunsaker at Body Basics in Norco, CA he grew up in sport therapy in Orange County and opened his private practice some years ago in Norco. He’s very talented and has always been a wonderful aid with my sports injury related questions. The man is an almanac and a fantastic therapist.

I’m hopeful my injury in minor in nature and I will be ready for Grappler’s Quest in March. That’s the goal anyway. Stay tuned for future posts.

I'll be in class tonight watching the technique training and doing whatever cardio I can without using left arm. I'm been focusing on ym legs and abs quite a bit lately which is good for my core training anyway. I had a good run this morning and I noticed a lot less pain in my knees (toward the sides of knee caps where the ligaments tie in). I think my legs needed a rest form the hard core training I had been doing up to my injury. REST is a very good thing.
I felt like I could run forever today.
